About the writer of this unit of work
Helen Cassidy is a retired primary school principal who has worked in New South Wales public schools for more than forty years. Helen has taught all classes from Kindergarten to Year 6, preferring senior multi-grade classes. Since retirement she has returned to the Mt Druitt area of western Sydney where she started her teaching career. She has a special interest in reading pedagogy and established Teacher Read Aloud programs in schools. Helen has been able to combine her passions for Aboriginal education, equity, children’s literature and professional learning in her most recent role as National Partnerships Co-ordinator at Emerton Public School in Mt Druitt. In this role she has led staff in the design and implementation of project- and problem-based learning, authentic assessment and the teaching of reading. In 2011 Helen contributed two upper primary units of work: Sustainability: Global footprints and Indigenous Peoples: People, place, language and song to the digital resource Global Words.
