Assessment task 1

Creating an iceberg diagram for events leading up to the national Apology to the Stolen Generations in 2008

Using an iceberg diagram as demonstrated in Sequence 5, students will demonstrate their growing understanding of the events that led up to the 2008 National Apology to the Stolen Generations.  ACHASSI133ACELA1524

Students will contribute information to their diagram during Sequences 6 to 10. They will add each item of information with its date and source on a sticky note or on strips of paper stuck to the diagram. They will group and regroup the notes as more information comes to hand.  ACELY1712ACELY1713

Students will comment on the saying ‘from little things big things grow’ by identifying in their diagram what they consider to be the big and little things and how one has led to another.  ACELT1613

Students will make links between events. For example, similar events such as the Wave Hill walkout from 1966  to 1975 and the strike by the Mardu people of the Pilbara in the 1940s could be linked as similar events. The Wave Hill walkout led to the petition to Lord Casey, so these events may be placed close to each other in the diagram.  ACHASSK135,  ACHASSI123

Students will meet weekly in small groups to view and assess each other’s work and in a brief conference with you, will talk about the information they have included and their reasons for its placement on the diagram. They will make notes about this task in their weekly meetings, using the Weekly meeting notes worksheetACELY1709

You can use the information from these weekly meetings to inform the teaching program and class timetable. For example, some students may need more time to use school computers because they do not have access to the internet at home or some students may have inaccurate information so you will need to revisit the lessons where the information was researched.

When the students are satisfied that they have enough information and that there are clear links showing cause and effect, they will stick the notes down permanently and decorate the iceberg diagram so that it can be placed in the class museum.  ACELY1715
